#MSW19 Savings Theme: Save to retire

Studies show few Americans have adequate savings for retirement but it’s never too late – or too early – to start saving.

Saving now for retirement will help ensure you have enough money to enjoy a comfortable standard of living when you stop working. If you are a service member or Federal employee, you have access to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) and if you opted into BRS, be sure that you are contributing enough to the TSP in order to get the government match. Don’t miss out on free money! For a spouse or family member whose employer doesn’t offer a retirement plan, consider putting money in an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Already saving for retirement? Try increasing the amount you save by 1 percent each year.

As part of America Saves Week, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration, in coordination with the Consumer Federation of America and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, is holding a free webcast for small business owners and their accountants on the retirement savings options available and the use of direct deposit for saving for retirement and more. Choosing a retirement savings plan can be easier than many small business owners think.

The webcast will provide practical information and helpful tips to understand the retirement savings options available for small businesses. The U.S. Department of Labor will discuss the options and how to get started after choosing a plan. The California Society of Certified Public Accountants will provide a peer perspective to help you consider and compare the options. The options not only provide an effective way to save for a secure retirement but most also provide tax advantages for both employers and employees.

The Consumer Federation of America (America Saves) will focus on how direct deposit helps employees save for retirement at work and build stronger financial futures. Direct deposit also helps employers simplify their business processes and increase productivity.

Join us for the webcast and get started saving for a secure retirement for yourself and your employees

On the Right Track to Build Wealth

Written by Super User | April 16, 2013

My name is Robina Wahl, and I am a military wife and a veteran. Although I am fairly new to the Military Saves Campaign, the message to “Build Wealth, Not Debt” reassured me that my husband and I were on the right track and doing the right things.

I have always been pretty responsible when it comes to saving and living within my means, but I was not prepared for the unpredictable employment lifestyle of being a Reservist and military spouse.

One That Almost Got Away

Written by Super User | November 26, 2010

Brody Lockwood - Like a typical fledgling, I started down the track of financial indebtedness. Nineteen years old and nothing to lose. Credit - who need it? Savings - that was for older people with responsibility. Debt - my parents were in debt ergo it must be OK. When I was eligible for reenlistment, I reenlisted for a multiple of 3 worth $15K. I was happy to pay off my debt, but would I be able to stay out of debt?
