TSP Rolls out Roth in May

Roth:  What’s it all about?

Simply put, Roth is all about options when it comes to the tax treatment of your TSP savings.  If you decide to make a Roth TSP contribution, the amount that you contribute comes out of your pay after-tax rather than before-tax as it does now.  That means that when you take withdrawals from your Roth balance, your Roth contributions come out tax-free because you’ve already paid the tax on them.  Not only that, but the earnings on those contributions are also tax-free provided you meet two basic Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requirements.*

For military spouse Martina and her husband, an E-5 in the Navy, accumulating a six-figure savings has become a reality. One might think that in order to save this much, it would take a great deal of sacrificing and forgoing a certain quality of life, but Martina and her husband would disagree. “Over the past few years (about five), we've managed to save almost $120,000 while mostly living on one income. We've learned so much about easy ways to save money and live a good life,” shares Martina.
