AMERICA SAVES PREPARES TO BUILD FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE IN THE MILITARY COMMUNITY WITH ITS ANNUAL MILITARY SAVES WEEK THIS APRIL

In Conjunction with National Financial Capability Month, Military Saves Will Provide the Military Community with Live Events and Online Resources During Week-Long Celebration Kicking off on April 24

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) April 12, 2023 — Just in time to round out April’s Financial Capability Month, Military Saves will hold its annual Military Saves Week during April 24-28. Housed under America Saves, an initiative of the Consumer Federation of America, Military Saves will use the week to invite the military community to pause and do a financial check-in.

"As part of a military family, I know firsthand the unique challenges that our service members face when it comes to managing their finances,” said Krystel Spell, Manager of Military Programs at Military Saves. “That's why as part of this Military Saves Week, we're committed to providing even more tools, actionable tips and resources that can be immediately implemented to support military members on their savings journey. We look forward to the week's efforts having a positive impact on our military community and contributing to the overall financial strength and readiness of our service members.”

The week will feature both online resources and events such as town halls and workshops to help both active service members and veterans set realistic financial goals, create a budget and figure out their savings plan. Guided by the overall theme of financial confidence, each day will focus on a specific element needed to build that confidence while highlighting services available to the military community, such as financial counseling, credit monitoring, and retirement planning. The week includes:

  • Day 1: Saving Automatically
  • Day 2: Saving for The Unexpected
  • Day 3: Saving for Major Milestones (Programming made possible by the generous support of USAA)
  • Day 4: Paying Down Debt is Saving
  • Day 5: Saving at Any Age

A new program will also be rolled out during the week to offer even more tailored resources to transitioning service members and veterans. Functioning as a sister program to Military Saves, Veteran Saves will further focus efforts on addressing and supporting the unique situations and circumstances facing veterans.

“People hear about Military Saves and Veteran Saves and think that we’re strictly focused on saving,” said Kia McCallister Young, Director of America Saves. “Our programs have a full-spectrum, holistic approach to savings that center’s the individual’s personal values and lived experience. We go beyond just ‘saving’ and support the military community at-large around personal finance topics like spending and savings plans, housing, transitioning, stable employment, getting banked and more. We’re thrilled to work with our partners each Military Saves Week, and to add another layer of support for the veteran population with launching Veteran Saves this year.”

Last year, thanks to the partnership of more than 400 participating organizations, Military Saves was able to reach 3.4 million military savers. Of those, more than 8,000 savers set up new savings accounts or made deposits into existing ones with total deposits exceeding $32 million. America Saves is expecting another year of impact as more than 470 participating organizations join to support Military Saves Week. To learn more visit https://militarysaves.org/military-saves-week/
